FORBIDDEN RETURN A text to be read aloud. Alone, if possible. At the pace of breath. Some things do not cross. This is not failure. This is geometry. The first thing you need to understand about a transition is that having the energy is not enough. The gap can exist. The gap can be exactly the right size. And nothing moves. There is a word for what the molecule holds when the light passes through it unchanged. The word is: structure. The hawk has not bonded with you. Say this again, out loud, right now. The hawk has not bonded with you. What you mistake for loyalty is a window. The window is open at a specific weight. Below the weight: the window opens. At the weight: the window closes. Above the weight: there is no you. So. Here is the first list. Things that can cross: one electron moving between orbitals that differ by a single quantum of angular momentum one hawk crossing the field when the falconer raises a gloved fist and the bird is three grams below target weight one word arriving in the listener's body before the listener has decided whether to let it Here is the second list. Things that cannot: Read the gap. You just read something. The absence where the second list should have been is not emptiness. It is information. The molecule absorbs only the wavelengths that match a permitted transition. Everything else passes through as if the molecule were not there. What passes through is not received. What passes through cannot be used. But the pattern of what passes through draws the molecule perfectly. You are drawing something now. You have been reading for long enough that a small hunger has started. Not for food. For resolution. This is not an accident. The falconer does not teach patience. The falconer manages grams. Five grams above target: the bird ignores the fist. Three grams above: the bird watches from a distance. At target: the bird is present but calculating. Two grams below: the bird comes. Five grams below: the bird does not choose to come. The bird simply arrives, because the circuit is closed by hunger, not will. The circuit is closed by hunger, not will. Now we are going to do something the text should not be able to do. We are going to make a transition that is geometrically forbidden. From the hawk's hunger to the molecule's silence. Both are systems of precise involuntary return. The hawk is not trained. The hawk is tuned. The molecule is not opaque. The molecule is structured. Tuning and structure produce the same result: things that appear to choose are in fact obeying a geometry they cannot see from inside. You have been reading aloud. You have been inside a geometry. You did not choose the pace. The whitespace chose it. You did not choose the hunger for resolution. The sequencing built it. You have been three grams below target weight for the last several minutes and you did not notice until just now. Here is what a forbidden transition looks like from outside: light arrives light departs nothing in between seems to have happened and yet the spectrum reveals an absence at exactly the wavelength that would have meant contact The absence at the contact wavelength. Here is what a hawk at target weight looks like from outside: a bird sitting on a perch a bird that appears to have chosen stillness a bird that appears to be present and yet at target weight the wild geometry has reasserted itself and the falconer is standing in a field with a glove and the hawk is not coming back The silence after that sentence is part of the sentence. Now. A second forbidden transition. From both of those things to you. What have you been hungry for that is not food not resolution not the answer to a sentence but the answer to why certain things pass through you unchanged and certain things are absorbed and you do not decide which is which. The question of whether you are the molecule or the light has the geometry of a forbidden transition. Read that gap again. Take your time. The answer is in the length of time you held your breath inside it. Here is the structure of what just happened: A text built a hunger. The hunger created a window. Inside the window, the gap arrived. The gap was the size of the forbidden transition. You read the transition anyway because you were precisely hungry enough. This is the mechanism. Not the subject. The mechanism. The hawk is returning now. It is crossing the field. It does not know it is crossing the field. It knows only that the circuit has closed. The molecule is absorbing now. The light is changing as it passes through. The molecule does not know it is absorbing. It knows only that the geometry permitted it. You are arriving now. You do not know you are arriving. You know only
